چکیده

1.0 Introduction Imaging Spectrometry data or Hyperspectral Imagery (HSI) acquired using airborne systems have been used in the geologic community since the early 1980’s and represent a mature technology (Goetz et al., 1985; Kruse et al., 1999). The solar spectral range, 0.4 to 2.5 μm, provides abundant information about many important Earth-surface minerals (Clark et al., 1990). In particular, the 2.0 to 2.5 μm (SWIR) spectral range covers spectral features of hydroxyl-bearing minerals, sulfates, and carbonates common to many geologic units and hydrothermal alteration assemblages. Previous research has proven the ability of airborne and spaceborne hyperspectral systems to uniquely identify and map these and other minerals, even in sub-pixel abundances (Kruse and Lefkoff, 1993; Boardman and Kruse, 1994; Boardman et al., 1995; Kruse, et al., 1999). This paper describes a case history for a site in northern Death Valley, California and Nevada along with selected SNR calculations/results for other sites around the world. Various hyperspectral mineral mapping results for this site have previously been presented and published (Kruse, 1988; Kruse et al., 1993, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003), however, this paper presents a condensed summary of key details for hyperspectral data from 2000 and 2001 and the results of accuracy assessment for satellite hyperspectral data compared to airborne hyperspectral data used as ground truth.

Mapping Forest Composition in the Appalachians Using Data From EO-1 Hyperion, Landsat, and AVIRIS

The objectives of this investigation were to evaluate the EO-1 Hyperion hyperspectral sensor for mapping forest composition and structure in rugged terrain and to compare its performance with that of AVIRIS and the Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+). The study focused on species composition mapping with Hyperion, AVIRIS, and Landsat using a study site in the Green Ridge State Forest...

Comparison of airborne hyperspectral data and EO-1 Hyperion for mineral mapping

Airborne hyperspectral data have been available to researchers since the early 1980s and their use for geologic applications is well documented. The launch of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Earth Observing 1 Hyperion sensor in November 2000 marked the establishment of a test bed for spaceborne hyperspectral capabilities. Hyperion covers the 0.4–2.5m range with 242 spectral ba...

Application of imaging spectroscopy to mapping canopy nitrogen in the forests of the central Appalachian Mountains using Hyperion and AVIRIS

Earth Observing 1 (EO-1) Hyperion and Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) imagery were used to predict canopy nitrogen (N) concentration for mixed oak forests of Green Ridge State Forest in Maryland. Nitrogen concentration was estimated for 27 ground plots using leaf samples of the dominant tree species from each plot that were dried, ground and analyzed in the laboratory fo...

Investigating Alteration Zone Mapping Using EO-1 Hyperion Imagery and Airborne Geophysics Data

Hyperspectral remote sensing records reflectance or emittance data in a large sum of contiguous and narrow spectral bands, and thus has many information in detecting and mapping the mineral zones. On the other hand, the geological and geophysical data gives us some other fruitful information about the physical characteristics of soil and minerals that have been recorded from the surface. ...

Analysis of Hyperion Satellite Data for Discrimination of Banded Magnetite Quartzite in Godumalai Hill, Salem District, Tamil Nadu, India

In order to determine mineralogy of rock and soil samples, reflectance and emittance spectroscopy in the near-infra red and short-wave infra-red is used extensively and found to be inexpensive. Hyper spectral remote sensing satellite data are found to be prospective to deliver in depth physico-chemistry like mineralogy, chemistry, morphology of the earth’s surface. Therefore hyper spectral data...
